Eastern Cape premier delivers on Health Care promise with new rescue vehicles
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the provincial Health Department. Following his promise after the elections, Mabuyane highlighted this dedication by appointing Ntandokazi Capa as the new MEC for the Department of Health.
On Wednesday, Mabuyane and Capa handed over 15 new rescue vehicles at SS Gida Hospital in Keiskammahoek. These vehicles are specifically designed for difficult terrains and provide immediate medical attention, potentially saving lives in critical situations.
Speaking during the handover, Premier Mabuyane stated that this initiative fulfills a promise made during the 2024 provincial elections, as outlined in the governing party’s manifesto, to meet the needs of the communities. He emphasized that the deployment of these ambulances, supported by rapid response medical teams, underscores the government’s dedication to the constitutional right to life.
“These vehicles are more than just transportation; they are lifelines that ensure timely medical intervention and save lives. We are also responding to the Human Rights Commission’s findings on the lack of access to quality health care services in rural areas, specifically addressing the inadequate number of ambulances,” said Mabuyane.
The new vehicles will provide critical preventative care, including immunizations for children, HPV vaccinations for eligible girls, antenatal care for pregnant women, and ongoing support for those with chronic conditions. This batch adds to the 170 vehicles already distributed across different districts. The government has invested R50.4 million in this initiative. These vehicles, including mobile clinics, will soon be distributed to other districts as well.
