Teacher arrested for drug possession at Thoko Thaba Secondary in Tokoza
Gauteng Education MECl Matome Chiloane has expressed grave concerns following the arrest of a Thoko Thaba Secondary School teacher in Tokoza, Ekurhuleni, for allegedly having drugs on the school grounds. The arrest happened on Wednesday, 14 February 2024, after the teacher was found with a stash of drugs kept in a bag and box at the school. The teacher was taken into custody and faced a court appearance on Thursday, 15 February 2024.
Chiloane has brought attention to the fact that the school’s leadership did not report the incident promptly to the Department of Education, leading to public unrest and a demonstration by local community members on Wednesday, 21 February 2024. As a response to this lack of immediate reporting and the severity of the situation, the Department is conducting a thorough investigation.
The teacher in question has been temporarily suspended from the school as a protective measure. The MEC emphasized the Department’s strict stance against such behavior, affirming that decisive actions will be taken. Chiloane has also urged the community to remain calm and allow the Department along with law enforcement to manage the situation towards a proper resolution.
