Vhembe and Mopani schools in Limpopo remain closed due to heavy rains

Limpopo schools in the Vhembe and Mopani districts remain closed this week due to heavy rains.

Most Schools in the 4 districts in Vhembe and Mopani are inaccessible for both teachers and learners.  The severe weather conditions are also a threat to learners, especially children in the early grades.

According to the department of education, the floods have disrupted the delivery of food and will also affect scholar transport for learners who reside far from schools.

The department also said it will advise when it is suitable for schooling to resume in the affected area

The South African Weather Service has issued orange level 6 and level 9 warnings for parts of the province, warning of disruptive and potentially dangerous rainfall, with an increased risk to life in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

The provincial COGTA Department said no official deaths or injuries have been recorded and conditions remain dangerous, with flooding also reported in other parts of Limpopo.
