The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced a recall of 25 729 Volkswagen Polo Vivo vehicles, following notification from Volkswagen Group Africa (Pty) Ltd. The affected vehicles were sold nationally between February 2025 and February 2026.
VW has reported that the rivet height on the handbrake lever in these vehicles may be outside specification. This could prevent the handbrake from engaging properly or, in rare cases, cause it to disengage unexpectedly posing a safety risk, especially on inclines.
Owners are advised to:
Park with extra caution, using first gear for manual vehicles or “P” for automatic models.
Avoid parking on slopes until inspection and any repairs are completed.
Hardin Ratshisusu, Acting Commissioner of the NCC, urged owners to visit any authorised VW dealership immediately for inspection and repairs, which will be done at no cost. The NCC is monitoring the recall to ensure compliance with the Consumer Protection Act and safeguard consumer rights.
