Drakensburg FC crowned champions at Informer Digital TV’s 3rd annual soccer ournament

Matatiele – Informer Digital TV successfully hosted its 3rd Annual Regional Teams Soccer Tournament last weekend, bringing together top talent from the Alfred Nzo and Joe Gqabi regions.
The tournament, launched in 2023, featured two teams from Mount Fletcher (Joe Gqabi Regional League) and two from Matatiele (Alfred Nzo Regional League).
Tournament organiser Luyolo Makatise said the initiative was created to strengthen football ties between the two regions while giving clubs crucial pre-season match experience.
“The main objective is to allow the teams to compete against each other, to measure the level of football in Joe Gqabi against that in Alfred Nzo,” he explained.
Since its inception, Alfred Nzo sides have dominated the competition. Young Ideas lifted the inaugural trophy in 2023, followed by Bhubesi FC from Cedarville in 2024. This year, Drakensburg FC continued the winning streak, claiming the 2025 championship with two wins and a draw.
Coach Sizwe Matiwane praised the tournament’s impact, saying it allowed his players to sharpen their combinations and gain momentum ahead of the new season.
“This platform is important for our growth. We are building a competitive squad and are determined to perform strongly in the Alfred Nzo Regional League,” he said.
Informer Digital TV Managing Director Andile Nomabhunga lauded the tournament’s success, emphasising that it reflects the company’s commitment to community involvement. He also invited more partners to support the initiative, thanking the Lady Ocean Foundation for contributing to this year’s edition.
