ANC Alfred Nzo Region slams ‘Triumphal’ Welcome of Municipal Manager Zamile Sikhundla

The ANC Alfred Nzo Region has strongly condemned the celebratory welcome of Municipal Manager Zamile Sikhundla, who returned to work on Wednesday following a favourable judgment by the South African Local Government Bargaining Council.

Sikhundla, who was ordered to be reinstated and report for duty by September 10th, arrived at the Alfred Nzo District Municipality offices in MaXesibeni at 8 a.m. He was met with a convoy of cars, traditional dancers, ululating supporters, and a procession led by individuals described as ANC Youth League members. The group accompanied him from the town entrance along Ntsizwa Street to the municipal offices.

In a statement, ANC Regional Spokesperson Lungisile Mzanywa criticised the display, calling it inappropriate and misaligned with the principles of a public institution.

“The Alfred Nzo District Municipality is a public institution meant to serve the people—not a platform for cultism, arrogance, or triumphalism,” said Mzanywa.

He emphasised the pressing service delivery challenges faced by residents, particularly access to water, which is under the municipality’s mandate.

“While the ANC respects the court’s decision and welcomes Sikhundla’s return, it is essential that professionalism and proper institutional culture are maintained. We must focus on the core mandate of delivering services and improving lives,” Mzanywa stated.

He further directed councillors, municipal management, and staff to prioritise stability, calm, and productivity in the institution.

“Employees are expected to be present at work during official hours and fulfill their duties as public servants,” he added.
