Proceedings at the Jafta Commission of Inquiry into violence at Walter Sisulu University were halted briefly when the mother of slain student Sisonke Mbolekwa broke down and left the hearing.
Sindiswa Mbolekwa had been listening from the public gallery as student leader Amanda Dlamini described the events that led to the fatal shooting of her son by WSU residence manager Manelisi Mampane.
According to testimony, Mbolekwa and two other students were shot while conducting what they believed was a peaceful protest. Mbolekwa later died in hospital.
Mampane, who is out on bail, briefly appeared at the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court last month. His case was postponed to October 30.
The commission is expected to continue until September, with more witnesses from both students and university management scheduled to testify.
